Message From Pastor Jim
Star of Wonder: Is There One for Us ?
Sunset Drive Friends,
One evening before Christmas I was gazing at Mars—so red and clear these winter nights. On occasion we can catch a meteor shower of and see “falling” stars! Stars inspire wonder and mystery even today, and their image is still used to label the famous: actors, sports figures, and even ratings on movies and CD’s.
Long before modern astronomy, how amazing it must have been for the wise men to see a star in the East signifying the birth of the King of Kings. If only we had a personal star to guide our own lives! In many ways we do. When Jesus was about to leave the disciples He promised the Spirit to guide them: in the Greek “Paraclete,”— meaning to “dwell alongside.” The Spirit guides us to discern between what seems urgent and what is truly important in life, and the Spirit reminds us of the words of Christ.
The wise men were led by the star not first to the manger but to Jerusalem. There the Scriptures were consulted by Jewish scribes. Only after following the Old Testament prophecy did they head for Bethlehem and find the star again--now shining over the stable. The Bible had guided them precisely. Ultimately wise men (and women) depend not on signs and stars but upon the Word of God!
In Revelation we find the greatest star: Christ Himself who says:
It is I, Jesus, who sent my angel to you …..I am the
the bright and morning Star.
Jesus is the light of the world and the God-light of Heaven itself! May we follow that star, nudges from His Holy Spirit, and the great Bible teachings of Jesus all the way through 2012.
Blessings at Christmas and the New Year !
Pastor Jim

From the Trustees
The Trustee request all church members/attendees be considerate of the elderly and handicapped when deciding where to park. With going back to one service, the parking lot fills up faster. The gravel parking lot is open to all. Possible improvements are being evaluated for the future use of the lot. Thanks for your understanding on this issue.

Please bring your food items with you to church. The collection box is located in the Fellowship Hall Foyer.
Altar Flowers
For your convenience, Flower Order Forms are available on the table in the narthex just outside the sanctuary doors or Contact Judy Post (896-7189) for more information.

Weekend Backpack Ministry for Children submitted by Sandy Cupp
According to the USDA, over 16 million children lived in food insecure (low food security and very low food security) households in 2010. Across the nation, churches and communities have become involved in a Weekend Backpack Ministry for children. The Backpack Food program was developed to help ensure that every child has access to nutritious food over the weekend. Studies have shown that children who eat nutritious meals over the weekend return to school ready to learn on Monday morning.
Sunset Drive United Methodist Church is partnering with John C. Myers Elementary School to bring this program to children in our community. John C. Myers is a Title I School, and 42% of the 450 students receive free or reduced lunches based on family income. About fourteen individual students who appear hungry on Monday mornings have been identified by the school staff. Our church would like to provide food for these students over the weekends. The names of the children will remain confidential. Parents will give permission for their children to participate. Nonperishable food items will be placed in a gallon size baggie and placed in the students’ lockers each Friday afternoon. Students will place the baggies in their back packs so that other children will not see the baggies of food. We plan to run this program from February 3 through June 1 of this school year.
We have set up a Weekend Backpack Ministry Committee. Chairpersons are Shannon Rellins, Janet Wager and Sandy Cupp. It will cost approximately $5.00 per week to provide food for each child. Members of our church family can contribute to this ministry by putting a check or envelope in the collection plate marked for the “Weekend Backpack Ministry” or putting money in the box marked “Weekend Backpack Ministry” in the narthex. Our plan is to purchase the items for the backpacks and store them in the pantry off of the kitchen downstairs. Our plan for January is listed below:
January 11 at 5:30 p.m. – Committee will meet and divide up items to be purchased.
January 18 – Have all items purchased for the month of February.
January 25 at 6:45 p.m. – All interested church members are invited to help pack the baggies.
February 3 – Baggies will be distributed to the children before they leave school for the weekend.
We ask for your prayer support and your financial support of this ministry to help children in our community.
Habitat For Humanity Building Fund submitted by Leon Miller
Habitat for Humanity Building Fund Update – Great news! So far, our congregation has given $11,000, that has been “matched” by several individuals in our congregation. (Total giving = $22,000). This includes $1,300 for the beautiful quilt made by Micki and Judy! There is still $4,000 in “matching money” available, so it is not too late. The State of Virginia offers a Tax Credit of 40% on individual donations of $500 or more, and on business donations of $1000 or more. Checks need to be written to CVHFH (Central Valley Habitat for Humanity) in order to qualify for the Virginia Tax Credit. For example, someone who contributes $500 will receive a $200 Tax Credit. There are “forms” in the Narthex that need to be filled out to receive the Tax Credit. If you are interested in supporting this effort, contact Leon Miller, Garnett Turner, or Mike Malloy today. Thank you for your generous support of Habitat in Broadway.

Finance Committee Update submitted by Leon Miller
Our congregation has been Blessed this year, and we have been a Blessing to others … by our prayers, our presence, our gifts and our service!
Financially, our giving for 2011 is meeting our budgeted needs, Praise the Lord! Our giving has averaged about $3,500 per week. Prayerfully, we will end 2012 with a little more money in our General Fund this year, for the first time in several years. Many of you have also given to our youth and many mission oriented programs. Thank you (in advance) for your continued faithfulness in 2012.
As you may know, our congregation is sponsoring a Habitat house in Broadway. Several individuals have pledged to match Habitat giving up to $15,000 this year. We already have received over $2,500 in contributions and more is on the way. Individuals who contribute over $500 to Habitat can receive a 40% Virginia Tax Credit (checks need to be written to Habitat). In addition, many people in our congregation have devoted many days of labor building the house.
God has given each of us at least one spiritual gift (Romans 12 and I Corinthians 12). “Giving is one of God’s Gifts”, and it takes everyone, using there “unique Gifts” to be the Body of Christ. As a congregation, we are blessed with many, many people who serve our congregation and our community in very special, caring ways. May God continue to Bless us, so that, we can continue to be a Blessing to others. Merry Christmas!
